{"id":9973,"date":"2023-03-06T19:02:39","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T18:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalpactenvironment.org\/?p=9973"},"modified":"2023-03-07T10:24:31","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T09:24:31","slug":"historic-un-treaty-on-high-seas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalpactenvironment.org\/en\/historic-un-treaty-on-high-seas\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic UN Treaty on High Seas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-center para-style-body\"><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">The United Nations High Seas Treaty<\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\"> is <\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">an instrument of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), agreed upon by an intergovernmental conference at the UN on 4 March 2023. <\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">Talks began in 2004, almost 20 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">Oceans produce half the oxygen we breathe<\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">, represent <\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">95% of the planet\u2019s biosphere<\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\"> and are the world\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">largest carbon sink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">Yet, until now, <\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">only 1% of the high seas is under any protection protocol and just 39% of the ocean falls under the national jurisdiction of individual countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">This new legal framework would place 30 per cent of the world&#8217;s oceans into protected areas<\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">, put more money into marine conversations, and covers access to and use of marine genetic resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">It protects resources of the sea by making <\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">environmental assessments mandatory before any new exploitation of marine resources <\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">in areas beyond national jurisdiction, such as deep sea mining.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">This treaty advocates for a<\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\"> precautionary approach to using marine resources responsibly<\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">, where no national jurisdiction can apply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">This treaty is decisive in enforcing the 30&#215;30 pledge (protecting 30% of ocean, land and coastal areas by 2030).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">National governments still need to formally adopt and ratify this agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations High Seas Treaty is an instrument of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), agreed upon by an intergovernmental conference at the UN on 4 March 2023.
