World Congress of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

3 September 2021 - 11 September 2021
Marseille, France

After an initial postponement due to the sanitary context, the IUCN Congress finally took place from 3 to 11 September 2021 in Marseille.

This Congress is held every four years and after South Korea in 2012 and the United States (Hawaii) in 2016, it was the first time that France hosted this event. Nearly 10,000 delegates (scientists, diplomats, protected area managers, civil society and NGOs…) from around the world gathered for this forum.

The Global Pact Coalition had a stand there to defend the need for an ambitious legal framework that would recognize our environmental rights. We met with hundreds of delegates, NGOs and state delegations, who added to the Coalition’s ranks.

We also participated in numerous conferences and roundtables organized by the IUCN around the issues of international environmental governance. Our Director General Yann Aguila and Special Advisor Lionel Chami defended the idea of an international treaty recognizing the environmental rights and duties of all.

The Congress resulted in the vote of several motions debated by state members and civil society. In particular, the members agreed on the protection of 80% of the Amazon by 2025!
