NGOs call for a Global Pact for the Environment

When NGOs were consulted for the first informal state meeting at the UN, from the 21th to the 23rd of July 2020, they called for the adoption of a Global Pact for the Environment.

On the 16th of July 2020, the NGOs accredited to the UN met during a webinar in order to prepare the negotiations for a Global Pact for the Environment.

This webinar enabled a discussion between Yann Aguila, general Director of the Global Pact Coalition, Janice Cox, director of World Animal Net, Ana Barreira, director of the Instituto Internacional de Derecho y Medio Ambiente, Johannes Müller, expert at Ocean Care, and Leonidas Zeferino Lex, lawyer.

The recording is available online.

After this webinar, the NGOs published their input for the informal State meeting.

In this contribution, the NGOs reasserted that the adoption of a Global Pact for the Environment is a necessity. They called for a political declaration that prompts the adoption of a Pact, and that reinforces the role of the United Nations Environment Program. They also suggested exploring the possible creation of an International Court of Justice for the Environment.

Their input is available here.
