From September 5th to 7th, the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group, established by UNGA convened its organizational session in New York.
States exchanged their views on the project of a Global Pact for the Environment and many supports already emerged from States and NGOs. The Group adopted the report of the meeting and set dates for three substantive sessions, all of which will take place in Nairobi, Kenya.
- A first substantive session will take place from 14th to 18th January 2019,
- A second session of 3 to 5 days duration will start on March 18th 2019 (after the fourth session of the UNEA),
- A third session of 3 to 5 days duration will start on May 20th, 2019.
Member States adopted a provisional agenda for the January session which provide for a discussion on how to finance the activities of the Working Group and for a consideration of the UN Secretary-General’s Report. It was agreed that each substantive session will adopt its provisional agenda and decide on its programme of work.
The next step is thus for the UN Secretary-General to issue his report, which is expected to be released by the end of November 2018.
