On May 10, 2018 the resolution opening the negotiations towards a Global Pact for the Environment was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly by a very large majority (Recorded votes in favor: 143. Against: 5. Abstentions: 7).

A special ad hoc Open-ended Working Group, opened to NGO participation, is established to consider the report of the Secretary General (to be published next Autumn) and to discuss options to address possible gaps in international environmental law and environment-related instruments.
