Publication of IPBES report: It’s not too late to act!
“An ‘unprecedented’ species extinction rate is accelerating”
The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) met in Paris from April 29th to May 4th, 2019 for its 7th plenary session. Often described as the « IPCC for biodiversity », IPBES is an independent intergovernmental body representing more than 130 member States.
In their report, IPBES experts sound the alarm against an « unprecedented » degradation of biodiversity (25% of endangered animal and plant species). According to experts, it is not too late to act, but only through the implementation of « transformational », profound changes. They invite, in this perspective, to « strengthen environmental laws and policies and their application ».
It should be noted that a Global Pact for the Environment could provide a common legal framework to impulse and support on a global scale those « transformational changes » that IPBES is calling for.
