First part of the Fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5)

22 February 2021 - 26 February 2021
Nairobi, Kenya

The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) is one of the major international meetings for the environment. Convened by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), it brings together every two years all 193 Member States, as well as civil society representatives.

The 5th session of the UNEA will be organized in two parts. The first will be held online from February 22 to 26, 2021, to avoid further spreading Covid-19. Its purpose is to define the actions and the budget allocated to UNEP.

The second part will be held in person the following year, in February 2022, and will be devoted to substantial issues. The theme of this session is “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”. It will particularly focus on preparing the Political Declaration provided for in UNGA resolution 73/333 of August 30,  2019 in line with the “Towards a Global Pact for the Environment” resolution of May 10, 2018.
