Sorbonne Call to Action for the Adoption of a Global Pact for the Environment

Legal experts from all over the world call on States to take action!

On Saturday 11 May 2019, at the close of an international conference held at La Sorbonne University in Paris, lawyers from all over the world called on States to adopt a Global Pact for the Environment.

Nicholas A. Robinson (USA), Nilüfer Oral (Turkey), Ginevra Le Moli (Italy) et Pilar Moraga Sariego (Chile) lent their voices to publicly launch this appeal.

This initiative is directed to Stats that meet in Nairobi from 20 to 22 May 2019 for the third and last session of the UN working group. The objective of this session is to decide whether a Global Pact for the Environment, gathering the main principles of international environmental law, is necessary.

According to the eminent legal experts that formulated this Sorbonne Call, the answer makes no doubt: a Global Pact for the Environment would strengthen the protection of the planet and its resources.

“We, members of the international community of legal experts, gathered today in La Sorbonne University in Paris, call for the urgent adoption of the Global Pact for the Environment.”

Texte of the Sorbonne Call to Action for the adoption of a Global Pact for the Environment:

  1. Humanity is facing an ecological crisis of tremendous magnitude. Climate change is a threat to mankind and to peace and security. Biodiversity is collapsing. The consequences, such as, in particular, food and water access, health and poverty, require governments to act urgently and firmly, on a national level, as well as through international cooperation.

  1. The Global Pact for the Environment would gather the rights and duties of governments, companies and citizens in one international instrument. It would thus contribute to strengthening the protection of the planet and its resources through a universal legal framework.

  1. The youth are now urging leaders to take action. Next week, States will meet in Nairobi to discuss the Pact project. The opportunity to enshrine universal and mandatory principles cannot be missed.

  1. Therefore, we, members of the international community of legal experts, gathered today in La Sorbonne University in Paris, call for the urgent adoption of the Global Pact for the Environment. The time to act is now.
